I'm a big fan of travel credit cards as I love traveling - but only of those with great flexibility and that don't charge an annual fee. Many travel credit cards in the US come with an annual fee and can be quite inflexible, but not this travel rewards card which I'm going to review now - Blue Sky from American Express®. This credit card by American Express, a GET.com advertiser, gives you points that are potentially worth 33% more than points on some other travel rewards cards.
Here I'll do a detailed review of the American Express Blue Sky credit card and tell you how we rate this card.
Things We Like About This Card
No annual fee. Some travel rewards credit cards charge an annual fee, but this card, Blue Sky from American Express, is one of the few cards that offer you travel privileges without you having to fork out any annual fee.
Receive 7,500 Blue Sky points when spending $1,000 in the first 3 months. Once you make purchases worth $1,000 during the first 3 months you will earn 7,500 bonus points, in addition to the points you earn when making your purchases. These 7,500 points can be redeemed for a $100 statement credit towards airline tickets, hotel stays, or other eligible travel purchases.
0% introductory APR for purchases and balance transfers for the first 15 months. After the introductory period, the variable APR is 17.24%-22.24% depending on your credit score. Do note that you still have to pay a balance transfer fee, which is either $5 or 3% of the amount of each transfer, whichever is greater.
Earn 1 point for each $1 spent on eligible purchases. Reward points can be redeemed for gift cards, statement credit or merchandise.
Every 7,500 points you earn can be redeemed for a $100 statement credit toward airline tickets, hotel stays and other types of travel. Note that points can only be redeemed in increments of 7,500. While other travel credit cards may also give you 1 point for every $1 spent, they usually require you to redeem 10,000 points for a $100 credit, whereas with Blue Sky, every 7,500 points that you earn can be redeemed for a $100 statement credit toward airline tickets, hotel stays and other types of travel. That means your points are potentially worth 33% more than points on most other travel rewards cards! We like.
You can book your own travel and still earn the same amount of rewards. This means that you don’t have to book your travel tickets with certain travel agents, instead you can look around for the best deals and buy the tickets that appeal the most to you, purchasing them where you want, without restricting you to buy from a specific website. This advantage of shopping around for your own travel tickets lets you find the best available deals and allows you to book the tickets for any date.
Travel Accident Insurance. When you pay for your travel tickets (including your family) with your card, you will be covered with up to $100,000 in travel accident insurance within and outside the US.
Car Rental Loss and Damage Insurance. When you charge your car rental to your card, you can be covered automatically at no additional charge.
Extended Warranty on eligible items you buy, with up to 1 more year of free warranty on eligible purchases made in the US. This means that if the warranty of the item you bought expires and the product you purchased breaks or has any problems, American Express can fix or replace the product for you if the original warranty was of 5 years or less.
Return Protection and Purchase Protection. Got a change of mind after making a purchase? No worries. Return protection allows you to return items that the store does not allow you to return. American Express will refund up to $300 per eligible item, until up to 90 days after the purchase was made. With the purchase protection you are offered with this card, you will be paid up to $1,000 per item that you purchased that was damaged, lost or stolen within the first ninety days. This is a protection that is worth having!
Our Least Favorite Things About This Card
You must have at least 7,500 points in order to redeem them, meaning that you would have to wait till you have 7,500 points before they can be redeemed for a statement credit of $100 toward hotel stays, airline tickets and other types of travel.
Blue Sky from American Express is designed for those who love traveling or who travel frequently and would like to earn points on purchases which can be redeemed as a statement credit towards travel purchases.
