Car insurance covers vehicles and motorists in the case of accidental damage or injury, and if you own a vehicle, you'll be required to take out some sort of insurance policy in most states. In almost every state, it is mandatory to have auto insurance liability coverage. Even if auto insurance isn't mandatory where you live, the right insurance coverage can save you serious money if you're ever involved in an accident.
When looking into car insurance, it's important to understand the different types of auto insurance coverage which are available, and how they benefit you. Some insurance policies will cover only damages when you drive, while others cover your family and even other people who may drive your vehicle, so it's important to understand which type of insurance you need in order to get the right coverage. You can read all about it in GET.com's Auto Insurance Guide here.
Insurance rates change quite regularly, and insurers are always coming up with new offers to attract motorists. The best way to find out if you're paying more than necessary for the insurance coverage you're getting is to use GET.com's comparison tool to find a policy that gives you more cover for your money. If you don't have auto insurance yet, just enter your state in the box below to find cheap car insurance in your area.
The list of auto insurance companies in the U.S. is huge, but only a relatively small number of insurers operate nationwide. We've put together a list of some of the best car insurance providers that are active in all or most parts of the country.
GEICO provides some of the most affordable car insurance coverage available. It offers solid discounts that make saving money on your car insurance easy. For example, you can get up to 25% off your premium by insuring multiple cars with this insurer. Driving a car with air-bags installed can lower your personal injury and medical coverage by up to 40%, and using ABS brakes could take 5% off collision coverage premiums. Online features like real time insurance quotes and 24/7 claims reporting will save you time and stress.

Esurance was one of the first insurance companies to take advantage of the internet to deliver a better service. You can get an insurance quote online at all hours. You can get good discounts (up to 25%) if you go 5 years without making a claim, and can get a multiple policy discount if you get homeowners or renters insurance with Esurance too. Installing the DriveSense device can save up to 30% if you are a low-risk driver. If you are a student, you will appreciate the discount of up to 10% for good students, and up to 15% discounts for PAC-12 students and alumni.

Nationwide. Along with standard car insurance coverage, Nationwide lets you benefit from a lot of optional riders. These include optional vanishing deductible (goes down $100 each consecutive year that you remain claim-free) and on-site glass repair coverage. Roadside assistance and towing and labor coverage are additional optional benefits. What I like best about this insurer is the long list of discounts you can potentially get. These can bring down your premiums a whole lot. Savings like 10% off for members of many farm bureaus, up to 25% off on multiple polices (home, car, life), and up to 20% off for multiple cars insured are just a few of the many discounts you can get. Members of your household can enjoy the discounts of up to 25% when they get a policy after you. This insurer provides gap insurance to cover the difference on your car loan after a write off. Your premiums won't go up after your first accident. Nationwide has pretty good customer satisfaction ratings, and if you are eligible for the discounts offered, you can get good value for your money.

Allstate lets you get up to 30% off certain premiums if your car came from the factory with motorized seatbelts and airbags. If you drive an economy car you can get up to 10% off your total premium, and further discounts are available for cars equipped with anti-theft systems or anti-lock brakes. Using its DRIVEWISE® system can also give you good discounts if you're a low risk driver. One of the best things about car insurance from this provider is that it gives its customers a claim satisfaction guarantee for car insurance claims. If you aren't completely satisfied with the service received when filing a car insurance claim, you can make a complaint within 180 days. If your complaint is accepted, you can get up to 6 months credit on your car insurance premium.

USAA is one of the best insurance companies for U.S. military service members, veterans who have honorably served, and their eligible family members. It provides car insurance discounts tailored to the needs of military personnel, such as discounts of up to 24% if your car is stored for long periods while you are on duty. If you store your car in a US Army base, you can get a 15% discount on comprehensive coverage. This insurer has a high customer service rating and depending on the state you live in, its auto insurance is also one of the cheapest for the coverage you get. If you or your family serve, or have served in the Army then this may be the right insurance provider for you.

Farmers. If you are at least 25 years old and are looking for low-cost car insurance, this company can provide you with some of the most affordable coverage available. Services include online claims reporting and bill payments, and support from local agents. You have the chance to get multiple policy discounts, as it offers everything from homeowners and renters insurance to life insurance. Enjoy good customer service and plenty of ways to get discounts on your premiums. If your car is equipped with anti-lock brakes, air-bags, automatic seatbelts or an anti-theft device, you can get good discounts on relevant coverage.

MetLife gives you some good added value with your car insurance policy. Your deductible is waived for windscreen repairs, and you also get identity protection services. Full cost replacement coverage comes as an option. Each consecutive year that you don't make a claim you will get a $50 credit towards your deductible. This builds up year after year until you have an accident. This isn't one of the cheapest insurers, and discounts are limited. If you have a good driving record you could get up to 12% off certain coverages, and if you're a member of an association or company that partners with MetLife, you could get an additional 10% discount. One thing that they got right in my opinion, is the Grandprotect plan which combines car, home, RV and umbrella insurance in a single policy with one premium. This can make your insurance life a lot less complicated.
