The Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard® in the US may not be as popular the Citi® / AAdvantage® Platinum Select® MasterCard®, a partner card, but it does serve its purpose as a frequent flyer credit card for those with excellent credit who often fly to Germany or other parts of Europe with Lufthansa from the US. Issued by Barclaycard, Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard® now offers up to 20,000 award miles for new cardmembers. Not only does this MasterCard (MA) offer a rewards system based on miles earned, it also rewards you when you make your first purchase with this card, and gives you a companion ticket each year.
Below I've done a detailed review of the Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard®, so that you can decide if it's the best airline rewards credit card for you.
Things We Like About This Card
Earn 20,000 award miles when you make your first purchase on this card and have paid the annual fee. This is a good promotion that's only for new cardmembers.
Earn 2 award miles for each $1 you spend on air ticket purchases made directly from Miles & More integrated airline partners. The airline partners include Adria Airways, AirDolomiti, Austrian Airlines Group, Brussels Airlines, Croatia Airlines, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Lufthansa Regional, Lufthansa Private Jet, Luxair and SWISS. So if you often fly with any of these airlines, you will chalk up air miles pretty fast.
Earn 1 mile for every $1 you spend on other purchases with your card. This card rewards you with miles for each dollar you spend, regardless of what you're purchasing. Take note that cash advances, convenience checks, balance transfers, credit card fees and finance charges won't earn you any miles.
Receive a companion ticket each year. When you make your first purchase after account opening you will receive a free economy class ticket for a companion and on your account anniversary every year you are a cardmember.
Redeem miles for flight awards. Your miles can be redeemed for flight awards and upgrades on Star Alliance airlines, Brussels Airlines, SWISS, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines and other partners. A quick check on their award mileage page shows that you can redeem a one-way ticket from New York JFK to Los Angeles LAX for 12,000 miles.
Miles don't expire as long as you make at least one qualifying purchase each month. This shouldn't be hard for you if you're planning on using this card to make some of your daily purchases.
No foreign transaction fee. This card has no foreign transaction fee for purchases made outside of the US, so if you make lots of purchases in a foreign currency, that could help you save extra money.
Enjoy a 0% intro APR for balance transfers (that post to your account within 45 days of account opening) for 15 months, after that the variable APR is 15.99% or 24.99%.
Our Least Favorite Things About This Card
$79 annual fee. Although this is a low annual fee, you must pay it every year for your card to be active. This fee is waived for SEN and HON Circle Members.
No intro APR for purchases. You will pay a variable APR of 15.99% or 24.99%, depending on your creditworthiness, on purchases made with this card. You can avoid paying interest by paying down your entire balance by the due date each month.
You must make at least 1 qualifying purchase each month for your miles not to expire. If you don't make at least one purchase with this Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard® from Lufthansa every month, your miles can expire.
Lufthansa Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard® will suit those of you who fly frequently with Lufthansa and wish to earn double miles on Miles & More partner airlines. With this card, you can earn up to 20,000 award miles when making your first purchase and paying the annual fee, as well as many more miles when making your day-to-day purchases. You will also receive a free companion ticket each year. Although this Miles & More® Premier World MasterCard® has an annual fee of $79, you will receive many miles throughout the year that will make the fee worth it.
Remember that you must make a purchase every month for your miles not to expire, so if you're not planning on using it to make your daily purchases but would want to get its benefits, I recommend that you at least use it to pay for your morning coffee or lunch once a month so that your accumulated miles don't expire.
