Bluebird card is an innovative card from American Express, a GET.com advertiser, which is neither a credit card or a bank account. Bluebird card is a reloadable card which allows you to write checks, withdraw cash from ATMS, pay bills, manage sub-accounts and more. Personally, I find this card accessible as there are no credit checks in order to obtain the card, so it's easy to apply for! Bluebird offers lots of features and cuts down on spending with no monthly fees, no overdraft fees, and no minimum balance requirement. This card is ideal for families as it offers the possibility of having sub-accounts to manage your family spending.
Bluebird is also a paperless platform and service, it delivers its notices and information electronically which is a very convenient and modern approach. In this review, I will explain the Bluebird card's features and benefits so that you can decide if this is a good card for you.
Things We Like About This Card
No hidden fees. One of the things I really like about the Bluebird card is its fee transparency and user-friendliness. All fees are kept to the bare minimum and unlike some other cards, there are no minimum balance requirements. With Bluebird, there are no annual or monthly fees, no overdraft fees*, no inactivity fees, no card replacement fees, and as a super plus, there are no foreign exchange fees either!
Below is the complete Bluebird fee chart:
Features offered by this card include direct deposits, Bluebird checks and the ability to add checks using the Bluebird Mobile App on your iPhone or Android device. You can use direct deposit to add all or part of your government payments or your monthly pay check for free.
Pay your bills online. Paying bills is easy with Bluebird since you can pay any bill online at no fee. Note that if you stop payment, then stop payment fees may apply. Online payments help you save time and money by avoiding trips to the post office, envelopes, stamps and unnecessary hassle. You can make your payments at Bluebird.com or on your smartphone with the Bluebird mobile app - convenient for busy people on the go!
Access to ATMs. You can use your Bluebird card at any ATM that accepts American Express Cards, including 24,000 MoneyPass ATMs. If you are enrolled in Direct Deposit and have received a Direct Deposit less than 30 days before, you may withdraw at MoneyPass ATMs at no fee. As a Bluebird member, you never have to pay surcharge fees at MoneyPass ATMs, which include Money Center Express machines that you will find at many Walmart stores. Keep in mind that you will have to pay a $2 fee unless you have used Direct Deposit less than 30 days earlier.
24/7 online and mobile account management*. You can manage your account any time with the Bluebird mobile app or at Bluebird.com. With the Bluebird mobile app you can pay your bills from your smart phone while on the go. You can also send and receive money and transfer money from your bank account. You can check your balance and transaction history, and even request it to be sent as texts to your cell phone. And, as mentioned above, you can also add checks with the Bluebird mobile app.
Create and manage up to 4 free family accounts. In my opinion, this is one of the most interesting features this card has to offer and makes it an ideal card for families. You can add sub-accounts for people over 13 years of age. Each account holder gets a personal card with their name on it. You can add up to four separate sub-accounts which you can manage and fund online. You can control the daily spending limits and you can turn ATM access on or off and receive e-mail alerts. Sub-accounts are a great way to manage family spending and to send money quickly if needed.
You are protected from overdraft. You can pre-authorise checks before you write them with the Bluebird mobile app or online. The funds are immediately deducted from your account so you know the check will be covered when cashed. You do not have to pay any stop payment or overdraft fees. You can order your checks online from your account and they will take around 10 business days to arrive.
Purchase protection. If you made an eligible purchase with Bluebird that got damaged or stolen within 90 days of purchase, you can be covered.
Fraud protection. With your Bluebird personalized card, you are 100% protected against fraudulent purchases if you lose your card or if it gets stolen.
Roadside assistance. Another perk is roadside assistance when traveling within the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. Note that you will be responsible for any costs charged by third party service providers. Roadside assistance can help you jumpstart your vehicle, arrange for towing and winching services and change your flat tire when a spare tire is available. You can also have up to 2 gallons of fuel delivered and there is a lockout service if you got locked out and left your key in the car. If you experience car trouble, you just have to call Bluebird and they can send help.
Customer service around-the-clock. With your Bluebird card, you are entitled to world-class American Express customer service at any time you may need it.
Entertainment access. In many states you can also benefit from occasional savings in music, sports and theater events, as well as advance tickets.
Global Assist Services. If you are more than 100 miles from your home and you need legal, emergency medical, or travel assistance, Bluebird helps you out with Global Assist Services.

Our Least Favorite Things About This Card
One of the main disadvantages of the Bluebird card is that it offers no cash back, rewards or points; so even though you don't pay many fees, you don't earn rewards on your spending. If you prefer a card that offers cash back and rewards, check out our selection of cash back credit cards and rewards credit cards.
The Bluebird card issued by American Express is a good card for those who are looking for a hassle-free alternative to checking and debit cards. It's a good choice of card for families since it offers you the possibility of having and managing up to 4 family accounts for your inner circle. What I like the most about this card is that there are almost no fees, and the fee information is clearly stated and disclosed, unlike some other sneaky cards in the market. You can easily receive electronic payments, manage your accounts online and on the go with the Bluebird phone app. Another advantage is that there are no credit reviews when applying for the card. Since it has no foreign transaction fee it is also a useful card for international travel and vacations.
A downside of this card is that you don't earn any rewards or cash back on your purchases - which in other words, doesn't let you save money while purchasing. However, since it is not a credit card, this card is solid in its offerings as an alternative to a traditional checking or debit account. Terms and limitations apply.

This card is absolutely wonderful....I've used this card for a few years and have not paid one single fee...I'm also getting 5% cash back on all purchases. I keep waiting for something bad to happen with this card, but nothing...only good things thus far! Some people claim that most retailers do not accept American Express...this may have been true back in the day, but as best I can tell is no longer true. Most large retailers definitely take this card. If you shop at mostly mom and pops then yeah then you will likely run into problems with this card not being accepted. I highly recommend this card! It's worth the onetime initial $4.00 fee.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE my Bluebird card. I can kick myself for not getting this card a long time ago because my payday is on Monday's but since I switched my direct deposit over to Bluebird I get paid 2 days early on Thursday nite at around 10:30 and the funds are available. I'm still keeping my checking account at my regular bank but Bluebird is AWESOME, nothing negative to say about it

American Express cards are not accepted at many places(because of the high cost to businesses to accept them) so i wont be getting this card. i have been using my Walmart visa money card for yrs. I like it and will continue with that.

I have it and I love it. It's so easy to add money at any Walmart register or customer service with no charge. The sub account feature is really nice, they have the money in their account immediately. The only down side is that American Express isn't accepted as widely as Visa/MC, and my sub account has had some trouble getting money off the ATM.

This is an absolute scam rip-off card! everything, and I mean everything about it is a rip-off and a terrible deal, Even Wal-Mart who sells the card will not honor it as a debit card and allow you to get cash back after a purchase. I have been denied the ability to pay several bills and even could not use it to pay the $52.43 to go on a Fishing boat to do a half day of fishing. The bank charged $3,00 for ATM and the Bluebird card charged me $2.50 so to get $40.00 of my money twice it cost me a total of $51.00, yes I paid $11.00 to get $40.00 of my own money! You cannot have your family add some money to your card at an out of state wal mart (in case you needed some emergency money) even if you give them your card number, you will have to spend $3.95 to buy a card to add money to your own card(unless you have your physical card there to be swiped! just another dead end with this card, Oh I forgot to mention that I was stuck with the temporary card for over two weeks(it was to be here in 5 to 10 days, I had to call several times before that was resolved! A total mistake was to get a Bluebird card, I recommend any one to avoid this card and this company.

I had this card thinking I could pull money off from the registers at walmart. Got there and all I could do was find out how much I have in the account or put more money on. Why would I put MORE money on when I can't even pull the money off from anything but a walmart atm (which at the time wasn't working)? It doesn't help that the place I wanted to buy some items doesn't even accept amex. Also wasn't able to pull money from ANY atm except the walmart atm. Done with this card and glad I didn't set up the direct deposit for my payroll check.
