Things We Like About Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®

  • Earn 2 miles per dollar on all your purchases. For every dollar you spend on purchases with your card, you will get 2 miles. This is one of the highest rates of miles earned for spending on all purchases that we've seen on a US credit card.
  • Earn 40,000 bonus miles. You will receive 40,000 miles after spending $3,000 or more on purchases within the first 90 days of account opening. These 40,000 bonus miles equal $400 when you redeem them for a travel statement credit!
  • Enjoy 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 12 months. This applies to the balances you transfer within 45 days of account opening. After this intro APR period you'll have a 16.24% or 20.24% variable APR on balance transfers depending on your credit worthiness.
  • Earn unlimited miles. Each time you make a purchase with your card, you earn miles, and there is no cap to the amount of miles you can earn with your card.
  • Earn 5% of your miles back when you redeem. This means that if you redeem, say, 50,000 miles for any travel purchases (including airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises, etc), you will receive 2,500 miles back 1 business day after your redemption has been processed.
  • Miles can be redeemed toward statement credit, gift cards and merchandise. When redeeming miles for statement credit, they can be used to pay all or a portion of airfare, hotels, car rentals, cruises and more travel purchases made within the last 120 days. That makes it easy for you to catch last-minute travel deals or make unusual travel bookings using this card and then simply reimburse your travel purchases by redeeming your miles for a statement credit towards the cost.
  • Access your FICO® score online for free. Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® cardmembers can view their FICO score 24/7 from their online account. This is a great benefit, as you can track and improve your credit score online, anytime.
  • No foreign transaction fees. This is ideal if you travel overseas often and make purchases in foreign currencies. A money saving benefit since many other credit cards charge a 3-5% foreign transaction fee when you use your card to pay in non-US currency.
  • Outstanding travel insurance. If you are in the habit of paying extra for travel insurance, or missing out on insurance coverage because you don't like the extra cost, this card could be the solution. When you use this card to pay for travel, you enjoy complimentary travel accident insurance, trip cancellation insurance, baggage delay insurance and auto rental collision damage waiver coverage.
  • World Elite MasterCard® perks. This card is a World Elite MasterCard®, which is the most exclusive kind of MasterCard in the US. You get access to the MasterCard World Elite Concierge, which can help you save time by taking care of everything from finding a store selling a difficult to find item to choosing the perfect gift. Other World Elite perks include your very own personal travel advisor, available to help you set and reserve every detail of your next trip without any planning fees. You also enjoy special hotel perks including complimentary breakfast for 2 and early check-in/late check-out (if available) at many luxury hotels.

Our Least Favorite Things About Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®

  • After the first year, you'll have to pay an annual fee of $89. Is the annual fee of $89 worth it? If all you want is miles, then you should consider carefully how much you will spend on purchases with this card, and how many miles you will earn on the spending. Remember you earn 2 miles for each $1 of purchases, and miles can be redeemed towards travel at the rate of 100 miles = $1 of travel purchases (you do earn 5% back on miles you redeem). So you will have to charge around $4450 per year to this card to earn the 8,900 miles you need to make up for the $89 annual fee you get after your first year. Since this card lets you earn good miles on all you purchases, you can easily use this card to spend at least that amount every year, and any spending above that is pure "profit". Plus, you would get 445 miles (5%) back when you redeem those 8,900 miles towards a travel purchase. Even if you only earn enough miles to make up for the cost of the annual fee, you would still have a World Elite MasterCard® with solid travel benefits to show for it.

How Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® Compares With Similar Cards

Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card also lets you earn miles which you can redeem towards any travel purchases you make. You get a one-time bonus of 40,000 miles (worth $400 in travel) after spending $3,000 on purchases within the first 3 months. That bonus is almost identical to the bonus offer you get with Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard®. You earn 2 miles per $1 (unlimited) on every purchase you make every day. So the miles are much like what you earn with Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® but Capital One® Venture® Rewards Credit Card does not let you get 5% of miles you redeem for travel statement credits back. However, this card has a $0 intro annual fee for the first year; $59 after that, which is lower than the $89 you pay for Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® after the $0 intro annual fee for the first year. Visa Signature benefits you get with this card include complimentary upgrades and special savings (at hotels, resorts, spas, and more) a complimentary concierge service, travel accident insurance, lost luggage reimbursement, and auto rental collision damage waiver. This card has no foreign transaction fee. The main points where Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® outshines this card are the more comprehensive travel insurance (trip cancellation insurance) and a low introductory APR period for balance transfers.

Barclaycard Arrival™ World MasterCard® also lets you redeem miles towards any travel purchases you charge to the card. You earn 20,000 bonus miles ($200 travel statement credit) after spending $1,000 on purchases in the first 90 days. You earn 1 mile per $1 on all your purchases, and 2 miles per $1 on travel and dining purchases. When you charge your travel purchases to this World MasterCard, you get worldwide automatic travel accident insurance, reimbursement for expenses if your baggage is delayed, trip cancellation/interruption insurance and no foreign transaction fee. This card has 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 12 months when completed within the first forty-five days of account opening, (16.24%, 20.24% or 24.24% variable APR after). Although this card doesn't pack as many rewards or benefits as Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® which has a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $89, it has outstanding travel benefits for a card with $0 annual fee. If you use your credit card for most of your spending, you might earn more miles with Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® than you would with this card, even taking the annual fee into account.

Discover it® Miles - Double Miles your first year has a special offer for new cardmembers only, where Discover automatically doubles all the Miles you've earned a the end of your first year. So the more Miles you earn during your first year as a new cardholder, the more bonus Miles you get. That bonus offer could potentially be extremely rewarding if you use this card for most of your purchases during your first year as a new cardmember. You get unlimited 1.5 Miles for every $1 of purchases charged to this card. Like the other cards mentioned here, your Miles have a value of 100 Miles = $1 and you can redeem them in any amount towards travel purchases you make with this card (or redeem for cash as a direct deposit to your bank account). This card lacks in the way of travel insurance benefits, but Discover pays back up to $30 a year towards your in-flight Wi-Fi fees with an automatic statement credit. You enjoy 0% intro APR on purchases for 12 months (11.24% - 23.24% variable purchase APR after). This card has no foreign transaction fee and no annual fee. But if you want card benefits like travel insurance, hotel and restaurant privileges and shopping perks, Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® gives you a lot more than this card does.

BankAmericard Travel Rewards® credit card has a new offer which lets you earn 20,000 online bonus points when you spend at least $1,000 on purchases in your first 90 days after opening your new account. See Terms. If you have a Bank of America® checking or savings account, then this is a very rewarding travel rewards card to use. But if you are a big spender and want more exclusive perks, Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® may be a better choice.

Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® is the card to get if you want World Elite MasterCard® benefits, high miles on all purchases and 5% of your miles back to use toward your next redemption, every time you redeem.

  • Our Verdict:

The Barclaycard Arrival Plus™ World Elite MasterCard® with $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $89, will suit you best if you plan to spend more than $4,500 a year on this card. Earning 2 miles per dollar on all purchases will let you earn miles at a really fast pace, even if you don't travel often. As a signing incentive, you can get 40,000 bonus miles after you spend $3,000 on purchases within the first 90 days, worth $400 toward travel statement credit. When you redeem miles towards travel purchases, you earn 5% back on the miles you redeem, a benefit that puts this card a step ahead of similar cards. You also get to enjoy 0% intro APR on balance transfers for 12 months (for balance transfers made within 45 days of account opening) and 16.24% or 20.24% variable APR thereafter.

But the real benefits of this somewhat exclusive card are the travel privileges it gives you. Just the complimentary travel insurance you get with this card can save you a lot of money if you travel fairly often, and the concierge service and personal travel advisor can save you loads of time. While you can get more exclusive benefits with cards like Citi Prestige® Card ,a partner card, which has a $450 annual fee, all things considered, this Barclaycard offer gives you very good value for money.
