Windows PC? MSE is free and integrates well. Unless you need some specific features you cant go wrong with this AV solution provided by the people who wrote the OS.

I would also grab MALWAREBYTES, it is a malware detecting/removing program that 99% of virus scanners cannot pick up.

I like AVG free. it's very popular for a reason- it works really well! They offer complete malware protection and minimal bloat.
The most annoying thing you have to deal with is reminders that you could upgrade and start paying money... but you don't ever have to.

Avast is the best on the list.

Microsoft Security Essentials sucks.
AVG is a resource hog

Avast hasn't failed me yet. Just make sure to stay away from Norton as it's probably the biggest rip off for an antiVirus out there

  Clam AntiVirus

Highly recommend Clam AV. It's open source (meaning the code that runs it is available for inspection) and it's completely free as well. It's up to date and modern. No spammy tactics like installing toolbars or other junk.

There are more advanced options that cost money, but for free this is the best option. I use it and install it on all my family member's computers. Works great.

If your copy of Windows is genuine then get Microsoft Security Essentials. If not then I would recommend AVG Free.

Definitely Microsoft Essential. I've been using it for the past 3 years and I've had no problem with it. It doesn't take a lot of memory usage.

Avast, Avira, and AVG are all great free antivirus. Its not so much how fantastic antivirus programs are now, its just that they need to be efficient and not bog down the system with load.

Avast Free edition and Malware Bytes. Maybe you might need spybot search and destroy, but probably not

AVG seems to be a common answer and I'd say they are right. I've been on the recieving end of my fair share of viruses in the past and ever since using AVG on my netbook I've been virus free. You can also do some research by going to cnet.com to check out reviews. It's a great website where you can custom catagorize your search. Ex: Free, Antivirus, Best Rated, Most Popular. There are thousands of reviews from consumers as well as professionals.

I say stick with avira, but thats just personal preferance...at the end of the day, how many viruses you get comes down to the user's internet activities...

Avast has gotten more commercialized as of late, here is a link to the free version. All you have to do after downloading and installing is to register for a key (which only requires name and email address).

The top 2 for free antivirus would be Avast! and AVG. However I'd also recommended MalwareBytes and Windows Defender.

i guess AVG is good but honestly if youre really worried about the protection of your computer it may be worth purchasing trend micro, ive had it from the start and i will always be a customer of theirs, they are amazing and the program has worked so well.

There are many and they all have pro's and cons. You need to pick one that offers the features that you specifically need:
- Avast
- AVG
- Malwarebytes (Great for scanning, but no real-time protection)
- Microsoft Security Essentials
- Clam AV
