I personally like Pro Tools, but that's probably because I am used to it and learned on it! There are a few things worth pointing out about Pro Tools 9.
First of all, I don't know if you have used Pro Tools before, but it is a professional editing program and you can create just about anything you could ever imagine on it. Very high quality.
Next, it works similarly to Garage Band.... meaning it is laid out in a similar way. If you are already familiar with Garage Band it is easy to make the switch.... except Pro Tools is way more complicated. But it's the same type format.
And lastly, with Pro Tools 9 you can use any interface you want! Very cool because in the past it was only compatible with M audio.
This is a great program that you should def check out!
I would really recommend REAPER. You can customize it to work just the way you like, and it's quite a feature-rich piece of software. You can customize all key shortcuts, make your own usable macros (to do multiple actions with one keystroke), customize visual layout, and even use visual themes created by users. Some users have even written scripts to do actions that aren't natively available when you first download REAPER.
To top it all off, a personal lisence is only $60 USD. I personally used to use Cubase 4 Studio, which was around $350. After making the switch to REAPER with everything set up the way I like, I am able to do more than I could with Cubase for a lot less cash.
Here's a link to the website you can check out. A free trial is available. www.reaper.fm
I must say reaper is the most powerful audio editing program for under $100. I know of some independent that use reaper (Among other programs, but they still use it)
The difference between the professional DAWs (Digital Audio Workstation) isn't that big, and taste and what you are used to plays a big role. A cheap good one with unlimited trial is Reaper. (mac+win) For a bit more money you get Logic (mac), Pro Tools, (mac+win) and Cubase (mac+win)
Personally I prefer Logic, which comes with lots of free synths and other plugins, which will come in handy if you're starting up, and pro tools is probably the most common in the business.

If you want a program that's easy, reliable and free, you check out Audacity.
It gets all the basic Music/Sound Editing and Creation done, but if your looking for something a bit more professional try out Avid Pro tools as mentioned by Jasmine, or your could try out Fruit Loops. Both are good :]
