I agree with Sean that you should go with a full set if you don't have the gear already. You need all of this stuff to play, so you might as well get it all together.
Tippman makes a pretty nice marker, this one is like AK-47 style.
The best thing about this gun is that it's big and heavy, and can take some serious abuse. It's not going to fal apart on you, no sir.
I think this is an excellent kit for a beginner.

I would suggest going to a store such as Big Five or Cabellas, or any other sporting goods store. For a beginner it doesn't make too much difference which one you get. The beginning models are all so similar you'll be very happy with them but you may want to get a feel for what will fit you best and be the most comfortable. Shopping online is great for research but nothing replaces the need to touch and feel your equipment.

Okay so I don't know much about paintball, but I do know that you need a bunch of equipment to play... especially face protection and stuff. That's why I would recommend going with something like this. For $100 you get the gun, a helmet, Co2 cartridge, hopper, and a harness. So maybe the gun isn't the best one around, but for a beginner I would imagine it will do just fine.
If you're like me, you're probably not too keen on spending a bunch of money on something if you're not sure if it's gonna get used very much, so this is a good first set...a trial run if you will.

Might be more than you want to spend, but these are great paintball guns. Don't get something too cheap because you won;t be able to keep up with anybody and it won't be fun!
