I have only heard great things about refurbished items from apple.com, so this one being only $19 over the budget, it's your best bet for a Macbook Pro. However, since you're on a budget, I really suggest you look for a Windows computer. OS X is great, but I'm not sure how much you'll get out of it without spending more. I'd recommend anything made by Asus or Acer, as long as it doesn't use AMD graphics.
AMD is know for not updating their drivers frequently, and when they do, they often mess more things up. That, and my girlfriend recently got a laptop with an i5 processor and an AMD 6650M graphics card and it's been nothing but trouble. Apparently AMD uses "switchable graphics" with Intel processors to save battery life, but the computer has a hard time figuring out what program needs to use the superior AMD card or the much more inferior Intel HD graphics. This causes issues like having Minecraft run worse than my much older slow video card because the AMD video card doesn't want to turn on. Currently, there is no way around this.
Another option is picking a laptop with AMD as the manufacturer for your CPU and graphics card to avoid the above problem, but in my opinion Intel is a much better processor company. A good Intel/Nvidia combo is hard to beat.

Unless you want to buy used or refurbished, you're probably gonna have to go with Air on this one (to keep it under $1000). Would this be something you would consider?
I think MBA is a pretty cool laptop, especially if you are frequently on the go. It doesn't have the most powerful performance specs, but for general internet/word processing/medium use it will be an excellent machine. Here's what's going on under the hood: 1.6 GHz Intel i5 dual-core processor, 2 GB DDR3 SDRAM, 64GB flash storage. That flash storage is great for travel and makes the thing start up almost instantly. It is very small...thin and light, but has a decently sized 11 inch screen.
This is probly your best bet under $1000.
