a 2700k is a 'cherry picked' 2600k. You're paying extra for a higher quality chip that will allow you to over clock higher. Doesn't actually perform any better, just gives you more OC headroom. If you're not planning on breaking OC world records, don't bother with with.
Actually, the hexacores are not over $1000. This is the Core i7-3930 for $600. I have it overclocked to 4.8 GHz! A beast of a CPU: the best for gaming and working! Really fantastic CPU.
6 cores gives absolutely no benefit to gaming. Unless you're going to be doing a lot of video rendering or ultra CPU intensive calculations (aka actual work) don't bother with high score CPUs. They offer no benefit to gaming (single threaded apps) or typical computer apps.
1.) more cores does not mean more performance when it comes to gaming
2.) even if more cores mean more performance, the chip architecture is way lame and actually performs worse than Intel chips of the same price range. This AMD series was a complete flop. Google any comparisons and see for yourself. DO NOT BUY THIS
For just a CPU (Central Processing Unit)?
For anything over $300, I'd pick up the eight core'd:
AMD FX-8150 3.6GHz 8-Core Processor @ $295.99 + shipping, or @$260.00 at Tiger Direct http://pcpartpicker.com/part/amd-cpu-fd8150frw8kgu
If all you're going to do is gaming, you don't need all the extra cores and Hyper Threading other pricier processors offer. 4 cores is more than enough for gaming (since they're usually only single threaded maybe sometimes 2) and it only costs 220.
