I think it depends on the bow tie you are wearing, but all customary colors of dress shirts I think would be more than acceptable. Black and navy will go with anything. When you asked this question, the color combo of a light pink dress shirt, and yellow paisley bow tie also seemed COMPLETELY AWESOME to me.

Bowties can go great with any dress shirt, it is about color matching, without clashing with patterns.

Adding a solid tie to a busy shirt creates a great accent and focal point to the shirt, keeping people from getting lost in the chaos of a loud shirt; a great patterned tie can bring a boring solid shirt alive by doing the same: creating a focal point to keep the shirt from looking like a wall of color.

Don't be afraid to just pick up random ties and lay them against shirts at the store..

Maybe a little too radical but if I'm going to wear a bow tie I'd like it to make me smile. I think this one is pretty fun and can really be paired with any color. White and back would be the traditional colors but you could go a little more wild and pair it with red or a darker pink. It'll definitely liven up your wardrobe.
