Honestly, if you're looking to get something fool-proof the only thing that has ever been considered fool proof is the Ravelco anti-theft device. It has been in the #2 spot since its inception for the top five ways to avoid car theft, right after take removing your keys. If someone wants to steal something from your car or wants to steal your car, they are going to accomplish it, regardless of the type of alarm. Code Alarm is a good way to go. I have this system on my car and it works pretty much perfectly. You can turn up the sensitivity really high so even a light touch will set it off. Got it professionally installed, I would recommend doing the same because the manual that came with it was not very helpful.
Car alarm with programmable hijack system, remote trunk release, auto central lock, 3 channel alarm system, separate wire for door-hood input, built-in relay, and two 4 button transmitters.

These are some good brands to look at; Clifford, Viper, Code Alarm, Prestige. There's probably more, but those are some good ones. Clifford is probably the best, they are also very expensive.
Make sure you get one with a shock sensor (I think most have one anyway) and they are usually adjustable. Turn it all the way up to its most sensitive setting. It should pick up vibrations from a saw, should anyone try to pull that stunt on you again. Sorry about the misfortune!

This might be a good one to consider. It's well within your price range and is a very reputable brand. It's got a shock sensor that lets you know when someone is messin with your vehicle. Of course it has an alarm, too, and even a starter kill.
If you feel like a challenge you might be able to install it yourself, otherwise have someone do it professionally.
This is a good deal though, an excellent opportunity to save some cash!
