If I may be so bold, I would suggest starting on acoustic! Just buy an acoustic guitar and some lessons so you can figure out what you're doing before you try messing around with all the other bells and whistles, which can be very distracting.

If you want a really nice amp you should check out the Fender Pro Junior Combo. It's small but impressive sounding... like you could use it on stage for a performance. As far as guitars go, I would have to suggest the Yamaha Gigmaker because that's what I started on, and I think it's a good electric.

Well if you just want something cheap that will enable you to start jamming right away you could try this kit. It's obviously not an amazing guitar (or amp, for that matter), but it will allow you to start getting comfortable on an electric and learn the basics. The amp is simply a practice amp, so don't be trying to play shows on it, as it probably won't give you the big sound you want.
But it's a good first guitar simply because it plays and it's cheap. No sense in buying something expensive if you don't even know if you're going to get serious about it. Also, I think it's a good idea to go with a company like Fender because they obviously know how to make a guitar, even if it is a lower end model.
