If you just need electric, my bf bought this one recently. He thought it would sound crappy b/c of the price and was just looking to screw around. He'd been a guitar player first. He says he was pleasantly surprised and thinks it sounds pretty good.

If you need one to be both acoustic and electric I would look for a used Thunderchief or Kelly. Great wood/ hollow body, nice sound. But you'd probably have to go used to hit your price range.
