This is the perfect-and I mean PERFECT-board for you. If you are a beginner you certainly don't need to waste your money on a real surf board (not that this one isn't real... I should say a normal surfboard).
This will give you the performance you need without breaking the bank. Because it's made of foam it can be big and not too heavy, so as a beginner it will be easier to A) transport, and B) control in the water.
Bigger surface area=easier to stand on.
A great beginner or advanced board. I suggest it very highly.

When my brother first got started this is the board he purchased. I was very durable, slick bottom, can be used for adults or children, comes with a leash and traction pad, has removable fins, and is a really great price considering that most stores sell it for around $300. It's a definite beginner board but it'll get you started for an inexpensive price and if you like it, get a bigger and better one depending on your ability.

I recommend this product because...Its best to start on one that's long because balance is easier. This one is a great starter board. I was afraid at first but when I got mine, I grew confidence and became pretty good at it. Its such a calming sport out in the wide ocean, a great workout too!

i would suggest something lonnnnng like this one. It makes it a lot easier to get on the surfboard and stay standing if it's longer.
The material is nice too because it's light and will be easier for you to handle.

Yep, long board is the way to go when starting out... might want to try craigslist for a slightly used board or an actual surf shop (they usually also carry refurb boards that are better in price).

This is the best board for a beginner. Its very light and easier to jump up on. Sometimes I think its a little weird and difficult to maneuver in the water but that might just be my inexperience as well.
