Brad's right, Tubbs is a great brand! I bought these shoes last year to pick up the hobby and it is really fun! I highly suggest it! This is a good entry level shoe for women, or at least for this woman.
I like them because they are comfortable and they lace up really easily. And of course, I can walk on snow with them.
I guess I am not the best suggester because i have only ever used this one pair, but I have had no problems with it, so I say go for it!
p.s. I priced out Tubbs and MSR, also Atlas, and to me Tubbs seemed like the best shoe! Good luck!
I know MSR makes a reputable shoe. You can get them anywhere from like $100-$200+ new. I don't know how much you want to spend, but they are a good shoe. Try also Tubbs.
I don't think that any one brand is better than another. Competitively it's like any other shoe, what works the best for one will not always work the best for you. Honestly if you're just starting out I'd recommend renting to first see if you like snowshoes and then you can try out a few to see which one you like best. It's often a little more expensive but snowshoes to me are like skis, if you're going to join the sport may as well get the best fit you possibly can.

I think you should check out REI to get a good idea of what's out there and what you want. They have some great brands and occasional sales. Also, if you see a shoe you like, you could always look on eBay or Craig's List to find a cheap pair.
