This is a nice buy for any beginner. I have a nephew about that age who started out with this... he is now also working with a teacher though and the teacher is now designing his curriculum.

This is also a good one.... http://www.amazon.com/Eugene-Rousseau-Saxophone-Me...
I have had a couple students use this book and have been very pleased with the results I have gotten. Very well put together. Rousseau was as good a teacher as a saxophonist.

I would suggest the Rubank Elementary Method for Saxophone. It was the book I used and many kids use. Starts with very basic stuff, and the material is presented in a clear and simple way.... moves up to more complicated material.
Also has a nice fingering chart in it.
