EA has had a bad reputation in customer service. Sometimes they are not so bad, and it's always worth a shot if you really have an issue. Only use it if there is no other option.
I never had any horrible experiences with Origin. Then again, with all these digital marketplaces popping up here and there, I never make any other marketplace that isn't Steam a primary source for getting my games. The only exception is if that is the only marketplace in which I can purchase and play the game on (ie: Battlefield 3). If a game is on Steam, I purchase it on Steam.
I personally haven't had any problems with it. Bought Dragon Age and the sequel on Amazon. It activated just fine. Only grief is it auto-downloaded all of the DLC without asking, so it was like a 27gig download when it didn't need to be.
I uninstalled Origin, simply because it did not work properly. I could log in to my EA account, but that's all. The store page would stay blank all the time. I tried it with the firewall off, no changes at all. Unless they fix this, I won't be buying any EA games that require Origin. Why spend money on it if I can't use it?
My experience with EA's customer service is limited to emails. Their emails are copy-paste responses. I had a ticket I re-opened via their site several times, but apparently their system can't pick up that you're following up on something older. I got the same answer as I did the first time. Like the person sending it didn't even read my new response. What good is a customer service that doesn't even read what you tell them?
Its pretty damn awful. To be frank, pulling out of steam was one of the worst decisions EA has ever made. Despite them being a large and stable publisher that theoretically should be able to hold their own in a market like this, they just can't provide the same support that steam can do. And on top of that they force people to buy from them so that they would be able to play games like Battlefield 3 on the PC.
Origin is known for being very unreliable, shady, and just downright immoral. I have read stories of past employees who have worked there, and they don't regret leaving. apparently , it's really bad to work there.
I've had little experience with Origin service, but one time I had to contact support for whatever reason. Their live chat is simply garbage. This is all I know.
Never had an issue with it. I have ME2, Bad company 2, and BF3 on it, all run fine, no installation issues even when preloading BF3 on release.
I also like the installation system better than Steam, because you can install where ever you want and games don't keep installing Direct X over and over for every new game you get.
I even bought my cousin BF3 from gamersgate $40, gave him the code, and he just entered it, downloaded the game, and done. We were playing in about an hour (download time).
Tried to complain about random drops in framerate on Battlefield 3. They responded by telling me I need at least a 528 mbps connection to play BF3. I asked if they meant Kbps but they said they were sure it was mbps. Not only is that insanely expensive, but it has absolutely nothing to do with what I originally asked. The above product pretty much sums it up.
I've contacted them twice.
1st time: Completely trash. Did not resolve my issue and then asked if there was anything else he could help me with. I told him he didn't actually help me with anything and then he ended the chat session.
2nd time: Actually attempted to help me out but failed miserably. Gave me a code for the game that didn't work. Gave me a discount code for a game I owned that didn't work. Gave me another code for the game I bought that didn't work.
I'd really rather not have to deal with them ever again.
I've heard many horrible stories about their customer service and billing departments but I've also spoken to people who have nothing good or bad to say about them because they haven't had any issues. Sadly the only way to find out is to experience it yourself. Everyone has had different experiences but the good and bad can be said of any company.
EA's Origin service is known as being, well, absolutely terrible. Instances such as when a player lost all of his Madden 2012 DLC and progress (over 40 hours) was wiped, EA only banned him permanently because he insisted on them fixing it so much.
