My son wants drum set for christmas and I have no idea where to even begin! Any suggestions under $500?

This is just over your budget, but a really, really great set. You can also think about changing out a few less crucial pieces of the kit, or doing a bit more shopping around (I've had friends snag the same set for $500). Note, they are birch, not maple, but sound great.

I would recommend a Ludwig drum set. You've probably heard of this company and seen their logo a thousand times...they've been in the drum making business for a hundred years. it's always good to buy instruments with a good reputation behind them!

These are pretty cool and much lighter and more compact than a regular drum set. It comes with 5 pieces and has great sounding drum, cymbal, and percussion sounds. It's programmable with 15 drum sets, snare pad, and an output for software. It's well built and sturdy, is realistic sounding, and has the ability to plug an iPod and play along with some of your favorite bands. Pretty cool set up.

I have heard that ddrum is a decent drum company, especially nice for a beginner kit.
I have also heard that while the drums are made well, the heads are not spectacular, so it would be in your best interest to invest in some new drum heads. I would say this is a pretty good price for full size kit.

This would also be a decent kit, although you might want to get yourself some nicer cymbals to go with it. You'll still be under the $500 mark!
