Any genre is fine. Just need something to play with a friend

Portal 2. Brought to you by Valve, one of the best PC Game developers.

Portal 2 is a first-person puzzle-platform video game. Like Portal, Portal 2 primarily comprises a series of puzzles that must be solved by teleporting the player's character and simple objects using the "portal gun", a device that can create inter-spatial portals between two flat planes. The game's physics allow momentum to be retained through these portals, which must be used creatively to maneuver through the game's challenges.

This game has the bonus of having a great single-player campaign.

The game can be purchased via Steam http://store.steampowered.com/app/620/

Most people agree that this game is pretty lousy by yourself but with friends it's an absolute blast. There are four different characters to play as with different class mods to customize your experience. I highly recommend this game.

  Magicka on Steam

Besides Portal 2, Magicka. Magicka is a funny co-op action adventure, in which you combine elements to make your own spells. However, this tends to go hilariously wrong, and you often end up dying both and laughing enormously.

From what I last know, this works the best over LAN. If across server, the game play becomes pretty impossible.

L4D2 is a great game if you like beating the crap out of zombies. It's got a good, long co-op campaign that has high replay value. If I were you, I would wait until its on sale on Steam for $5, which is fairly frequently.

I would say left for dead since that is a personal favorite. The "AI Director" keeps games different enough to maintain a challenge.

  Portal 2 on Steam

Portal 2 is a great multiplayer game, and a great single player game. Both sets of campaigns are different so when switching from multiplayer to singleplayer you don't feel like you're doing it all over again. It's pretty cheap too, works out about $30.

Borderlands: Game of the Year on Steam

Great for co-op. It's a Role Playing Shooter which basically means it's hack'n'slash with guns. Tons of items, lots of enemies and loot, 4 playable characters and unique visuals. Also the DLCs are decent and add to already huge replay value.

Killing Floor. Imagine if you took Zombies Mode from Black Ops and made it better. It's made by an independent developer, which is strange because the game is amazing. It pits you against several hundred infected (and there are multiple kinds that must be killed in separate ways if you don't want to die), and has 2-6 player multilayer online. It has great sound and gameplay and will last you a long time.

Team fortress 2. Not only is it a great hectic FPS to play. It is also made by Valve and is free to play. You choose your class and play a game mode like Pay load(Get move the train cart buy staying near the vicinity of it), catcher the flag, or catcher the point. You can find weapons and items to help you or just make you look BA. Ether way its a good time all around.

I would go for L4D2, it's fun and at times funny. Get a group and a play time maybe even a LAN party and let the games begin.

If you want to do it on one computer try Worms, but if you're doing it online I can't recommend Portal 2 enough. You don't need a mic or anything like that in order to be able to communicate quickly thanks to the controls.

Borderlands is a great RPG with up to four player co-op.

Magicka is also a lot of fun, you'll probably spend more time killing each other than getting anywhere in the game though. (Intentional or not. :P)

Terraria is a good 2D sandbox game where you build up a base and search the world to take down big bosses for awesome loot. (A bit hard to describe this one, but it's worth the money.)

Dungeon Defenders is an awesome wave-based defense game with RPG elements, it will easily entertain you for quite some time if you enjoy games like that.

Trine 2 is a puzzle game that has a co-op aspect to it if my mind recalls properly, I've only played the first which didn't have co-op, but it was a great game.

Then of course Minecraft is always pretty fun with a friend.

You might want to look into minecraft with a multiplayer server, using mods it could be transformed into anything you want.

I forgot about Minecraft. Minecraft is amazing too, the possibilities are quite literally endless in creative mode and the campaign mode can be really fun as well, especially when it's not just done on your own.

-An overlooked co-op game that me and my friend really enjoyed was Resident Evil 5. We had loads of fun with the quick time actions (haha) and all the saving each other the whole time. Good scary co-op game I thought.
Portal 2 was a great game too, well the first playthrough.
-Titan quest Immortal Thrones in really cool with someone.
-Saints Row 2 and Saints Row 3 :D so much silly fun it was ridiculous! If you can just try them out.
- Dawn of war 2 Retribution was really great with a friend and also nice to do some RTS if you want some change from FPS.
-Killing floor is amazing for the long run.Takes some time in the beginning but later on its Loads fun. Many hours have been spent with my mates and this game. The survival aspect with your friends is really fun :D GG

Great game, available on steam. Often mislabeled as a minecraft clone, couldn't be farther from it. It's essentially an open-world multiplayer Metriodvania game, and the coop is great. A good Let's Play of it can be found here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89fW4MTJvRs

These are my absolute favourite coop games:

Battlefield 3
Left 4 Dead (1 and 2)
Portal 2
Borderlands
Dead Island
Gears of War 3 (xbox only.. booo!)

There are also some mmorpgs that can be considered "coop" but I stuck with "normal" games as not to encourage that sort of shady behaviour. ;)

It matters really what type of game you are in and in terms of fun and gameplay type statistics. IF your looking for a fun and can be challanging game, look to the zombie genre. These can offer more than 2p eople as coop if you wish. Games such as killing floor.

If your looking for some more team oriented gameplay and a bit more serious. Try the Dota type game genres. Games like Heroes of Newerth, Dota2, League of Legends (the easier and less serious out of the two).

Portal is another series
and Battlefield 3 is also a pretty fun coop.
