My advice would be to listen to your music and mess around with the settings until it sounds right to you. It's a very personal thing, so everyone might like something a little different. Keep on messing with it until it sounds good! I think that's about all you can do!

Isn't there a metal preset on the equalizer for your music player? A sound card would work, but if you have a decent motherboard it's not really necessary.

I've been using winamp and windows media player and other than the standard equaliser settings that's all nothing.. furthermore they are THX certified speakers but how do i get the right surround sound quality out of them.. I feel like alice in wonderland when i have to think about messing with the settings

Angela State is definitely right. Not much to add, though having a dedicated sound card usually has software with it that comes with presets for different types of music.
