You might try a used/ re certified Nikon--new it will put you over budge--I've shot great photos at night with Sigma 30mm f1.4, Nikkor 50mm f1.8 and Nikkor 18-200mm lenses (not kit lenses). I really love Nikon for its lenses in general. I started to learn on an old 35mm Nikon and have been partial to Nikons ever since. You'll also need a good tripod when you're gonna shoot super open at night. Nikon recommends you turn off VR when you shoot at night. Overall the D80 is going to give you a lot of control, and you can get some gorgeous shots.

This might help you out. This Sony really performs well under many conditions. It's designed for everyday shooting but is fast and functional. This camera will provide excellent images in low light situations and it offers features such as face detection, smile shutter, and a manual focus that will be great for portraits or action shots. I think you'll like using it at your reunion or anywhere else you might venture to go.
Not much help here, but I don't know how your day shots turn out. But with skill you should be able to get good night shots with whatever camera you use.
Considering investing in a tripod as-well if you think you'll be taking large group shots, it helps if you also need more exposure during the nights as it reduces hand shake.
I think this would be the best option in your price range. I am assuming you would like to get a camera and lens for under $1000.... I would also recommend a Pentax K-5, but the body itself is $999.
The D5100 will be an excellent low light camera. With a 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing it will shoot very effective, low-noise shots from ISO 100 to 6400.
Just make sure to practice beforehand so you don't miss any of those precious moments!!!
