I would have to suggest the AWD Subaru Impreza. They are reliable, high safety rated vehicles. All Wheel Drive is awesome! It's in your price range, too.
Buy American! Go with a Ford Focus, or a Pontiac G6... those are both really nice cars, made right here in America. They are absolutely competitive in every way with foreign cars.
Our country is in serious need of any stimulus possible, and if everyone bought American cars it would be great for our country!
I think that Toyota and Ford has some amazing cars right now. The Ford Focus is getting rave reviews right now and a lot of hype regarding the internal features as well as gas savings. The Toyota Camry and Avalon are both awesome cars that you might like also. They are extremely comfortable, have lots of room, and are great on gas. I'm also a fan of the way they drive. It's very smooth and reliable. Great cars.
I would suggest a Toyota Camry. My mom drives one.... I helped her pick it out off the lot. She decided to go with a manual transmission and I think it was right around 17, 18 grand, brand new.
It is a very nice car. The manual tranny is so smooth it practically drives itself. It's a pretty large car, so there is lots of space inside, but it still gets fantastic gas mileage..... although I don't know exactly what it gets.
The only negative thing can think of with this car is the bumpers. They are pretty delicate! They smash up pretty easily, but I would say most new cars have similar technology on the bumper. Designed to take all the impact so you don't feel it in the car as much.
All around it's a great vehicle!
The Honda Fit is a really nice option. Really nice four door hatch back with good gas mileage. Standard is a fuel-efficient 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 117 horsepower and 106 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard, with a five-speed automatic transmission being optional. I like the way it drives quite a bit.
