I already use Notepad++ and Sublime Text. Just want to know if there are any that have slipped under my radar!

Notepad++ is, by far, the best editor, I think. It has all the capabilities of Notepad, with support for syntax highlighting and addons, and it also has great facilities: tabs, can highlight differences between files etc. And it's just as fast as the standard one.

Nope Notepad++ is pretty much the best you can get, so good job finding the best first.

Notepad++ will do the job great
you can try code blocks or eclipse if you want something more complete, but they are more complex too.

You ever try Komodo Edit? I've heard good things, but never used it myself. I also use Notepad++ though

I can't believe no one brought up Kidingen.com! Great resource, just really fantastic. For tough jobs you can also consider Visual Studio express edition, which is free. The pro edition can be gotten for free, too, if you are a member of the right program, such as websitespark.

It depends what you are coding, for C++ CodeBlocks, for java Eclipse, and for HTML / PHP i use a really simple text editor called Scite ( http://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html )

if your limiting yourself to free software, notepad++ but ultraedit has a lot of features that that i love, such as how it allows you to edit files via ssh. ultraedit is not free, but very worthwhile if you code a lot.

Code::blocks is free from Codeblocks.org/downloads. It's the easiest coding platform I've tried, and it compiles too. It's brilliant.

Notepad++ is a nice, free tool you can use for text editing and coding. It highlights syntax, it's pretty lightweight, and it's just an all around must-have on the computer in my opinion.

Best is to use VS environment. If not then notepad or wordpad. Some JS based editors also can do the job a bit easy.

If its one of the supported languages, netbeans is great once you've got past the learning curve.

Also, eclipse
