I think it depends on what you want to watch on it.
For sports and gaming, look for something with a high refresh rate... at least 120 Hz (or plasma)
For gaming you want something with a quick response time... like 2 ms if you can.
In general, the standard right now for picture quality is 1080p, so I would try to find something with that resolution. If you get an LCD screen (as opposed to Plasma) try to get one that is LED backlit, as it will be more energy efficient.
Beyond that, I would highly suggest going somewhere that you can look at a bunch of TV's side by side... that is the best way to really decide what you like, as far as I'm concerned.

This is a great overall HDTV. Excellent picture quality for both movies and gaming. There's a lot of different things to consider when considering what is good for a flatscreen TV but over all you will want uniformity, good color and sharpness, deep blacks, good menu options and basic features. Things that don't really matter but seem like huge selling points are refresh rate, resolution, contrast ratio, viewing angle, and energy star rating. It's mostly confusing information and really don't tell you how good the picture quality is. Just fyi.
